Huangshan to Shanghai 400km Race

Many different paced groups with up to 24 hours to finish the race. About 1500 starters and assume most finished. Started at 9am in Jixi with a big send off. Rolling hills for a bit, nice up hill, fast downhill and then flat for the last 250km. The first part was great scenery, blocked off roads, waving locals. Perfect. Then it turned into a bit of urban / suburban / industrial sprawl for the rest. Not too bad and good group of people doing it. Some people stopping all the time, others trying to go for strong average pace without stops (support car a very good idea). A well organised event and would suggest it to anyone who wants a bit of an ultra challenge.

My Personal Experience: Great uphill, better downhill, left pedal disintegrates after 100km or so and I’m left with a 2cm stump to cycle on for 75km. Find a Giant shop, get a new left pedal. Now i’ve got 1 normal peddle on left / 1 road peddle on right but better than slipping off the bloody stump every 3 minutes. Food/drink issues kick in for last 100km which gives me serious ingestion and convulsions. Gets dark and starts to get a bit hypnotic with all the flashing rear lights. Nice very short stops. Good crowd, others sharing drinks and food. All in all a much more interesting ride than the 400km i did around Taihu earlier in the year.

Our team, Rocket  Science Pocari Sweat did very well. Guess we could have won the team race if we had signed up as 6 to begin with. Scott the rodent came first (bloody strong effort), Roger third, Alex and Josh top 20, Liam and myself top 60. Team B with Joshua, Phil, Sam, and Mat did seriously well as well. Thanks to our sponsors and thanks to everyone along the route.

Big thank you for the sponsors.

Yup, I’m one of those that chose to stopping all the time! what to do, can’t fight the aging! but glad to see the Strong Team A did extremely well, you all could have won the team catergory if you had 6 riders at time of signing up. Special congratulations to Scott & Roger for the super win!

    A great day. Easiest 400 I’ve ever done 😉

The welcome in Jixi and Xuangcheng county was amazing. For a first race experience, I don’t think it could be beat. Things did become a bit more of a grind once we hit Lin’an.

There was good variety on the journey, with the climb, awesome descent, and the flats.

Definitely recommend the climb and Qingliangfeng, and hope that we can climb there again soon.

Lucky to join the adventure at the very last minute, which did help by not having to ponder the enormity of the task for so long. Big thanks for Josh for making that happen, as well as Rocket Science and Pocari Sweat for their support,

Photos do great job in highlighting how enjoyable the first 150km. The lack of photos for the final 250km sum it up pretty well. A u-turn after Qingliangfeng next time?

A final big up to OPJ (One Pedal Jencks), for his astounding effort and Scott ‘Hobbit’ Gigante for taking the win.
