A interesting race in an interesting place. Should try next year! Thanks Olivia Ghisoni for the post.
The Liping Kabrathon (kayak, MTB, run) is a two-day multisport race taking place in Guizhou province.
A few of us from Shanghai, Beijing and Hongkong raced it in June.
Day one: 5km run, about 3km lake kayak, 53 km MTB.
The race started with a fast and hot 5km run in the streets of Liping. At T1 we grabbed life jackets and started kayaking. The course was 5 loops of a man-made lake. With different abilities, the kayak leg was a little messy, but not more than the swim in most triathlons.
Most of the MTB course was on roads (but not road bike friendly), which was a bit of a shame but still great fun. The bike course crossed many villages where loads of locals cheered on. The energy and atmosfere was pretty cool!
The finish was 40km away from Liping in a remote Hmong minority village. We had time to visit it and transport back to the race hotel was organised.
Day 2: 38 km MTB, 1km run, 4km river kayak, 7km run.
The second day of MTB was tougher, hillier and even more beautiful. Most of it was off road and through tea plantations.
T1 was very smooth with volunteers taking our bikes and putting them on trucks back to town.
A very steep 1km run took us to the start of the kayak. The course went down a calm and wide river surrounded by forest.
The final 7km run was on an ciment path going through greenery and along a river. It was beautiful and very hot!
At the finish line some locals were singing and playing traditional musical instruments.
All in all, it was a fab weekend with a very chilled atmosfere. The organisation was smooth and the organisers very generous with international athletes; we had half of our travel reimbursed and accommodation and food offered. Registration was 300 rmb.
